The art of really trying
A basic rule to make change work
When I was a performing arts student, in my first year, one of my best friends decided to put on a show. She gathered me, a few classmates of hers and and a bunch of mine, together and we got to work.
She has always been a visionary — an artistic talent I admire and love to work with; I think I knew that as soon as she took the reigns and started directing, staging and choreographing for that play.
The very first rehearsal, she set a ground rule that I’ll never forget:
Whatever I ask of you, do it fully and to the best of your ability. It might be utter nonsense, but I need to see that with my own eyes.
Followed by the promise that she’d listen to our ideas too — after rehearsal.
This rule has stayed with me ever since. Not just for creating musicals and performances, but it works in life too.
Whatever you do, whatever new habit you want to implement, do it fully and to the best of your ability. Don’t just dabble with the idea. Really give it your best.
